What Are NFC Business Cards and Do They Actually Work?
An NFC card looks like a normal business card, but with a small chip inside. Tap it against a phone and it instantly opens a link — your contact details, website, booking page, social profile or Google review page. No app, no typing, no lost paper card.
How NFC cards work
NFC stands for Near Field Communication — the same short-range technology behind tap-to-pay. The chip in the card stores a link. When a phone comes within a few centimetres, it reads the link and pops up a notification to open it.
Because the card only stores a link, what it opens can be updated at any time. Change your phone number, move your booking system or run a promotion, and every card you've already handed out points to the new destination.
Will it work with my customers' phones?
Most modern smartphones can read NFC. iPhones from the XS onwards read NFC tags without needing an app, and most Android phones support NFC as long as it's switched on in settings. For the few phones that can't, a printed QR code on the same card gives everyone a backup.
The smartest ways to use them
- Digital business cards — share your details in one tap at networking events and meetings
- Google review cards — keep one at the counter so happy customers can leave a review in seconds
- Booking cards — send customers straight to your online booking page
- Smart links — one link that opens a page with your website, socials, menu and contact options
Do they actually work?
They work best when they remove friction from something customers already want to do — save your number, book again, or leave a review. A review card on the counter with a friendly "tap to review us" prompt is one of the simplest ways for a local business to grow its Google reviews.
Quick answers
Do NFC cards need an app?
No. Modern iPhones (XS and newer) and most Android phones with NFC switched on can read them without an app.
Can I change the link on an NFC card?
Yes, if the card is set up to point to a link you control. Update the destination and every card already handed out opens the new page.
What is an NFC review card?
A card with an NFC chip (and usually a QR code) that opens your Google review page when a customer taps it with their phone.
